The Gamma Omega chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta Donates $2,000 to Blazer Kitchen
The Gamma Omega chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta, located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, donated $2,000 to Blazer Kitchen, a food pantry for students and employees on UAB’s campus. The UAB Office of the President, through the Blazers Against Hunger campaign, matched that donation bringing the total amount donated to Blazer Kitchen to $4,000.
The Gamma Omega chapter hosted Dress Down to Fill Up, a philanthropic dinner to raise money and to support the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation as well as Blazer Kitchen. Of the event’s success, the chapter’s philanthropy co-coordinator, Alyssa Davis, shared, “Through generous donations, sponsors and guests that attended our inaugural Dress Down to Fill Up, the Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta was honored to contribute a donation that helped Blazer Kitchen reach their fundraising goal of over $28,000.”
Dress Down to Fill Up was held at Cahaba Brewing Company on November 11, 2017. The event’s main focus was to bring awareness and raise money to address hunger in our community and what is being done to help address this need. During the dinner attendees heard from Lisa Higginbotham, Benevolent Fund Program Manager at UAB, who shares Alpha Gamma Delta’s passion for fighting hunger. Higginbotham introduced Blazer Kitchen, a food pantry on UAB’s campus that serves students and faculty. Attendees were enlightened to the need and encouraged how efforts are underway on a local level to help people in the UAB community who are living with food insecurities. About the fraternity’s donation Higginbotham shared, “Blazer Kitchen is grateful for the commitment of Alpha Gamma Delta to fight food insecurity on the UAB campus. The women of Alpha Gamma Delta were the first volunteers in Blazer Kitchen helping us put together shelving and stocking our pantry, refrigerators and freezers with healthy, fresh, frozen and nonperishable food. Their continued support volunteering and holding food drives is essential to the success of Blazer Kitchen. Alpha Gamma Delta’s donation will ensure Blazer Kitchen expands its reach deeper into our UAB community filling the plates, hearts and minds of students, employees and patients.” Since Blazer Kitchen’s opening, more than 10,000 meals have been served.
